What Are Jackson's Cell Salts Made From?
Please note: The information below describes the starting mineral ingredient used for each cell salt before it undergoes the homeopathic manufacturing process used to prepare the finished 6X potency.
Cell salts are homeopathic mineral preparations, but what does that mean in practice? Are the active mineral ingredients obtained directly from naturally occurring mineral deposits, or are they manufactured through controlled chemical processes?
At first glance, it sounds as though there should be a simple yes-or-no answer. In reality, the answer depends on what we mean by natural and synthetic.
The simple answer
The mineral ingredients used in Jackson’s Naturals cell salts are well-defined inorganic compounds made from elements that naturally occur on Earth. Some of these compounds occur naturally as minerals, while others are more commonly manufactured from purified mineral-derived starting materials.
However, they are not simply raw rocks ground into powder. Before a mineral compound can be used as a pharmaceutical ingredient, it must be separated from unwanted material, purified, standardized, and tested.
In some cases, the exact required compound already occurs in nature and can be purified directly from a mineral deposit. In others, naturally occurring mineral materials are chemically converted into the specific compound required for pharmaceutical manufacture.
What does “synthetic” mean?
In everyday language, synthetic often suggests plastics, petroleum chemistry, artificial colours, or something entirely foreign to nature. Under that definition, the description does not fit these mineral ingredients.
Chemists and pharmaceutical manufacturers use the term more broadly. A material may be called synthetic simply because it was produced through a controlled chemical reaction, even when every starting element came from naturally occurring minerals. The word describes the manufacturing route, not whether the final compound is “real.”
Two ways a pharmaceutical mineral ingredient may be produced
Although the details vary from one compound to another, the starting mineral ingredients used for cell salts generally reach pharmaceutical manufacture through one of two broad pathways.
1. Purification of a naturally occurring compound
In some cases, the exact chemical compound required for the pharmaceutical ingredient already occurs naturally as a mineral or dissolved salt. Manufacturing therefore focuses on separating it from accompanying materials and improving its purity and physical consistency.
Examples include:
- Potassium chloride (KCl) from sylvite
- Sodium chloride (NaCl) from halite, seawater, or natural brines
- Silicon dioxide (SiO2) from quartz or silica sand
The natural material may be crushed, washed, separated, dissolved, filtered, recrystallized, dried, and milled.
Throughout these steps, the desired compound generally retains the same chemical identity. What changes is its purity, particle size, moisture content, and physical consistency.
2. Controlled manufacture from mineral-derived raw materials
In other cases, the exact pharmaceutical ingredient does not occur in sufficiently large, pure, or commercially useful natural deposits. Manufacturers therefore begin with naturally occurring mineral raw materials and chemically convert them into the required compound.
Examples of cell salt ingredients commonly produced this way include:
- Dibasic calcium phosphate (CaHPO4)
- Ferric phosphate dihydrate (FePO4·2H2O)
- Dibasic potassium phosphate (K2HPO4)
- Magnesium hydrogen phosphate trihydrate (MgHPO4·3H2O)
- Dibasic sodium phosphate (Na2HPO4)
Manufacturers control factors such as pH, temperature, concentration, mixing, crystallization, and hydration state to ensure that the correct compound forms.
Some mineral ingredients can potentially be produced through more than one pathway. Regardless of the route used, the finished starting material must meet the applicable standards for identity, purity, composition, and quality.
Whichever pathway is used, the goal is the same: a material with a confirmed chemical identity, controlled impurity profile, consistent physical properties, and reliable performance during pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Why not simply use natural rock?
Naturally occurring minerals are rarely pure. A mineral deposit may contain clay, silica, carbonate minerals, iron oxides, metal sulphides, moisture, and trace contaminants. Their composition can also vary from one deposit or mining location to another.
Raw mineral powder would therefore provide neither the purity nor the batch-to-batch consistency expected of a pharmaceutical ingredient.
Processing is used to isolate or manufacture the desired compound, remove or control unwanted material, standardize its physical characteristics, and verify that the finished ingredient meets its required specification.
Why pharmaceutical purity matters
Using purified mineral compounds helps support:
- A consistent chemical composition from batch to batch
- Removal or control of unwanted mineral and elemental impurities
- Reliable mixing, trituration, and manufacturing performance
- Testing against defined identity, assay, moisture, and purity specifications
- A consistent standard of quality for every finished bottle
From the mineral ingredient to the finished 6X cell salt
Everything described above concerns the starting pharmaceutical-grade mineral ingredient.
Once that ingredient has been obtained and tested, it undergoes the separate homeopathic manufacturing process used to prepare the finished cell salt. Jackson’s Cell Salts are generally prepared in a 6X homeopathic potency, using organic sucrose in the finished product and following the applicable methods of the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States (HPUS).
